Best password managers for everyday use

Best free Password ManagersPasswords are the first line defense in protecting the identity in the computing world. To ensure the protection of the online identity, it is important to protect the passwords of your online access. Be it your email account or your job site password, the protection of these passwords are very important.

The typical weaknesses of passwords are:

  • Same password for multiple accounts and applications and mostly with same user name and occasionally the username is the email address
  • These days the memory of people are becoming weak and people tend to forget passwords. As a workaround we write down passwords in small paper sheets/sticky  and stick around the computer location
  • Another way of remembering passwords is by storing passwords in excel or other sheets in the computer itself without protecting it. (more…)

How to run your web based infrastructure at Google?

google for businessAs many of us know Google offer great services for all levels of users. Be it is your personal usage, home business / small business usage or enterprise use, they have one or multiple solutions for every category of users. In this article, I will be writing about the potential use of Google for your business, especially on how you can run “almost free” web infrastructure.

To have a website with your own domain name, you will have to buy one. You may choose to use one of the popular domain registrars or even Google itself. The cost of the domain name normally ranges between $8 to $15. Some domain names would be lower than this and others might be higher. I am taking the domain name ciso.in for examples in this article

Website

Once you have the domain name, you will need to set up a website.  If you have some web development background with a bit of HTML knowledge you could do it yourself, otherwise better get a developer. To setup a website, you could use either Blogger or Google Sites service offered by Google.

Blogger allows you to setup websites with the style of a blog. You may also have websites with a normal brochure style. To setup the website, you need to start a blog at Blogger.com. Map the blog to your custom domain. Customize your theme to your brand. Post your content as posts. Map the post links to your menu items and that’s it. you are good to go. The not so good side is that the links are not that beautiful and may not be very SEO based thing you might want.

The other service you should explore is Google Sites. Google Sites for naked domains is bundled with Google Apps; which can be accessed from www.google.com/a . Google sites as well offers custom URLs so that you could map your domain name to the Google Sites . The advantage of Google sites is that it is provides clean URLs as and the way you like it to be. Once your domain is mapped to Google as required, you should set up a Google Site. Once you have the Google Site, you will go to the Site Setting > General > Web Address Mapping > Map this site area. From here you can map the domain name to the site.

Email

Google Apps offers email, which is more or less Gmail. The only problem with the Google Apps email is that it will not be offering all the Gmail services. To setup the email, you will need to make changes to your MX records so that the emails will be forwarding to Google Mail. (more…)

Search Engine Wars – Microsoft Yahoo alliance

Recently, Microsoft and Yahoo have now received the regulatory clearance from United States and European Union regulatory bodies to form the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance. This will allow the alliance to compete with the Search engine leader today, Google, to some extent.

This 10 year deal was agreed between Microsoft and Yahoo in last July, which is the largest effort Microsoft has taken to bring a good competition with the rival Google in the online business. Microsoft has lost almost $5 billion in the last 4 years in the online business.

With the introduction of Bing, an upgrade to the Live, Microsoft could pickup 3.3 points of marketshare in the online search market. (more…)

We need 50000 new staff. Are you one among them?

The tech biggies are getting into a recruitment spree. It appears that collectively  TCS, Wipro and Infosys are planning to hire about 35000 to 50000 new staff this year.  If you recall the performance of these companies were not bad and some them have gone beyond the expectations. With the positive global clues, it is very much possible that the big tech companies are planning for higher growth.

According to India Times, TCS plans to hire about 30000 new staff in the financial year 2010-11 where as Wipro has plans to hire 7500 in the next two quarters.

TCS CEO and MD N Chandrasekaran said, “China is a tough market for IT firms and the company was seeing business opportunity in Europe.” The company is currently seeing an 8-10% growth in revenue from domestic operations and is eyeing a double-digit growth in the next two years.

Chandrasekaran said the company had signed a few large deals as well as a number of smaller ones. ”The financial services sector will drive growth. We expect good growth from retail, pharma and utilities,” he said.

The company, however, expects a lesser growth from verticals such as telecom and manufacturing.

Chandrasekaran said the company will hike salaries of its employees in the coming fiscal, but did not give details. TCS, has not hiked wages in the current fiscal, but employees have received 150 per cent VA payouts in two consecutive quarters — Q2 and Q3 of FY’10.

“We are on a path to hire 1,000 people. We have already hired 300,” he said, replying to a query on hiring plans for the current fiscal. In Q3 of FY-10, TCS had made 7,692 net additions, compared with a net addition of 320 in the previous quarter. (more…)

Google Buzz

GOOGLE Buzz - Photo by REUTERS/Robert GalbraithGoogle has rolled out the Buzz to most of its Gmail users starting yesterday. I have my buzz enabled only by today after noon. First impression is that it is not really a Facebook clone and it can give some more social face to Gmail.

Google Buzz, definitely challenges Facebook as well as Twitter and for me it appears more as a Twitter killer than Facebook killer.

Google Buzz generates posts based on your activity in the connected sites. A connected site is a partner site such as Youtube, Picasa, Flickr, Twitter, Google reader, Google chat status etc…

It could be easy for the followers to keep track of the activities you will be doing; it allows users to quickly share messages, Web links and photos with friends and colleagues directly within Gmail, a popular email system

By integrating Buzz directly into Gmail, Google hopes to jumpstart its social networking push by leveraging the large pool of Gmail users. This gives them a competitive advantage over starting something new from scratch. (more…)

100 days of Windows 7 – Kudos to MS

Windows 7 LogoWindows 7 has completed its first 100 days after the official launch. In the past, the previous operating systems were heard so much of criticism in the initial days. How did Windows 7 performed so far?

In short, Windows 7 did perform well. Most of the users were happy about the product. No noticeable security holes were heard. Despite millions of new installations, no major problems have been reported. “There have been astonishingly few problems with Windows 7,” says Axel Vahldiek from German computer magazine c’t. He’d know: his magazine fields questions from readers. Unlike the OS’s predecessor, Windows Vista, the questions received by c’t general involve minor issues. (more…)
